the orion fund BY THE NUMBERS

We have been working hard to grow The Orion Fund! The following graph shows the number of student grants we have given starting out in 2005. We now receive over 40 applications state-wide when our grant cycle opens in the spring each year.

We work with several city colleges, state universities and several campuses of the University of California. In 2011, we started a major effort to connect with more college campuses.

The Orion Fund generally awards grants ranging from $500 to, in special circumstances, $5000. We would love to be able to do more. Grants are awarded to cover unpaid medical costs, medical technology, living and educational expenses. When appropriate, we pay directly to providers. Students do need to be registered with a college or university to receive an award. Our first priority is students in a medical crisis; our second priority is students without other resources besides The Orion Fund. Most often, our grants simply help to keep these young adults afloat during difficult times.

The following two charts show both our income and our expenses for 2013. About half of our income comes from The Orion Fund Golf Tournament each year. Thank you very much to all those who support us for the Tournament! All of our operational costs are covered by board members, so that 100% of donations go to students, either as grants for medical, living and educational expenses, or towards The Orion Fund Film Project. The Orion Fund Film Project is a privately sponsored program with dedicated resources. Many thanks to Jenny Berlekamp of Piedmont for her support!
